DEPARTMENT OF AFRICAN AND GENERAL STUDIES

Introduction

The primary goal of the department is to equip students with knowledge of the diversified and many-sided dimensions of African and Ghanaian culture in order to enable students to better appreciate the vital place of socio-cultural issues within current thinking on development.

New initiatives in Academic Programmes and Activities

In efforts aimed at being responsive to the national development goals and the  dynamics of the job market in Ghana the under the year under review the department succeeded in developing  the following new academic programmes, which are currently being considered by the Graduate school for the needed procedural action for implementation:

Master of Arts/Master of Philosophy Degree in Development Communication

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree in Development Communication

These proposed academic programmes are been mounted at a time when high premium is placed on the acquisition of knowledge and skills in Information, Communication and Technology in Ghana. At the under-graduate level, following the directive of the Academic Board of UDS to structure the Limited Specialisation Programmes, which were offered at levels 300 and 400 in the various departments in the Faculty of Integrated Development Studies (FIDS), the department now runs an option in Development Studies.
