UDS 25th Anniversary Celebration-International WASH Conference

Theme: Sustainable WASH and Water Security: Successes, challenges, lessons learned and the way forward

Venue: UDS Tamale Campus

Date: Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th January, 2018

1.0 The UDS/DRI WASH Centre

The University for Development Studies (UDS), Ghana; and the Desert Research Institute (DRI) of the United States of America, have established a partnership to develop strategies for sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and improve water security across Ghana, with a specific focus on the water stressed northern regions. This partnership is expected to develop strategies to build the capacity of WASH sector stakeholders to effectively design and manage WASH systems, and increase resiliency to climate change and improve water security. As part of this initiative and to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of UDS, the two intuitions will host a conference on Sustainable WASH and Water Security in Tamale January 17 – 18, 2018. Co-sponsors of the Conference include The Ghana Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), Catholic Relief Services ( CRS ) Ghana, World Vision Ghana and the Universities WASH (UWASH) Network .

1.1 Objectives

The purpose of this conference is to bring together experts across disciplines and fields related to WASH, including WASH practitioners, WASH policy makers, WASH clients, WASH consultants, contractors and NGOs involved in designing, implementing and in the monitoring and evaluation of WASH systems. The conference will highlight emerging research and best practices related to WASH and the sustainable management of water resources in Ghana, in particular in light of climate change impacts and population growth. The conference will also provide a forum for better collaboration between academics and WASH practitioners to support better delivery of sustainable WASH for communities across northern Ghana.

2.0 Invitation

The UDS, CRS and DRI, through the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research and Consultancy Services (IIRaCS) of the UDS are inviting individuals, government agencies, academics, civil society organizations and other interest groups to participate in the 2018 International Sustainable WASH and Water Security Conference as part of the 25th anniversary celebration of UDS in Tamale. Researchers, development practitioners and policy makers are hereby invited to submit papers on the following related sub-themes.

  1. Climate change and WASH - adaptation and resilience
  2. Environmental degradation and desertification
  3. Small scale irrigation: prospects and challenges in the face of climate variability
  4. Menstrual hygiene and girls’ education and school attendance
  5. Water resources management in northern Ghana
  6. Climate change, WASH and incidence of diseases
  7. WASH and local governance
  8. WASH, local enterprise and livelihoods
  9. WASH in disasters
  10. WASH, gender and vulnerable people

2.1 Guidelines for Submissions

Interested persons and organizations who wish to make presentations should submit an abstract of not more than 250 words outlining the purpose, methodology, major findings, conclusions and recommendations to the addresses below. Abstracts should also include the title of the paper and contact details. Submission of abstracts is from Monday 7th August, 2017 to Friday 6th October, 2017. Full papers of accepted abstracts and slides for presentation should be submitted by email in MS Word and MS Power Point respectively by Thursday 30th November, 2017.
