Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
The Department of Applied Chemistry & Biochemistry is one of the pioneering Departments in the Faculty of Applied Sciences. The Department had its first intake of students in 2003 and graduated its first batch of BSc (Hons) Applied Chemistry students in 2006. The total number of students in the Department during the 2010/2011 academic year is about 310 and academic staff strength stands at 12. The Department currently runs two (2) four-year degree programmes leading to the award of BSc (Hons) Biochemistry and BSc (Hons) Applied Chemistry.
The courses offered in the Department are multidisciplinary and offer great opportunity for the study of unique, yet broad-based programmes in the areas of general and applied chemistry as well as in general biochemistry. The course content is designed to suit the students unique individual interests and those interests that are of importance to societal needs and the overall development of Ghana in the choice of elective courses.
The Department has proposed to run the following programmes in the near future
- MSc/MPhil, PhD in Chemistry
- BSc, PG-Dip, MSc in Forensic science (Faculty collaborative programme)
- BSc Pharmaceutical engineering
- BSc Chemical & Biomolecular engineering
- BSc Industrial chemistry
The objectives of the programme include:
- To produce graduates with proficiency in theoretical and practical aspects of the chemical sciences;
- To produce graduates in high demand on the labour market;
- To produce graduates with potential to pursue research degree programmes at home or abroad in areas relevant to the economy of the country;
- To provide necessary and in-depth knowledge in the chemical sciences;
- To prepare high achieving-students for senior research positions in industry, or a career in college-level or university-level teaching and research
vision
To be a World class institute of excellence in chemical and allied sciences.
