Staff of the Faculty of Applied Sciences


Vision of the Faculty

The Faculty is striving to be recognized as a center of academic excellence while championing rural development and poverty alleviation and bringing about a clear and visible transformation of the country especially in the deprived rural areas of the Northern Regions and other parts of Ghana

Mission

The Faculty has thus embarked on a mission of providing a programme of study that is development oriented and practical life skilss imparting to make its graduates relevant to the overall national development effort.

Goal

The overall goal of the Faculty is to create an environment that will enhance quality studies and stimulate research in appropriate technologies and development of projects to help solve peculiar problems of society.

Objectives

  • Be a centre of excellence for local and international research
  • Provide needed research, consultancy and leadership to enhance the development of communities in its catchment area and the country as a whole.
  • Produce excellent scientific human resource that meet the needs of industry
  • Produce graduates who apply science and technology for development with high sensitivity to sustainable environmental management and community development.
  • Provide applied skills for self employment and job creation

The Faculty has the following Departments:

  • Applied Biology
  • Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry
  • Applied Physics
  • Earth and Environmental Science
  • French Language Centre
  • Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

Undergraduate Programmes

The Faculty offers four-year degree programmes with options in the following:

  • Applied Biology
  • Applied Chemistry
  • Applied Physics
  • Earth Sciences
  • Environmental Studies
  • Mathematical Science, with options in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Mathematics with Economics, Financial Mathematics, Demography and Social Statistics.

All students would normally do first year foundation courses in the basic Sciences before branching to any of the options from the second year.

Entry Requirements

SSSC/WASSC holders seeking admission into the Faculty of Applied Sciences programmes must meet the following requirements:
For non Mathematics and Computer Science courses applicants must have passes/credits in:

  • Three core subjects, namely English, Mathematics and Science
  • Any three relevant elective subjects from the Science Programme with an overall aggregate of 20 or better in the six subjects.
Applicants to Mathematics option courses must have passes/credits in:
  • Three core subjects, namely English, Mathematics and Science
  • Any two relevant electives plus Elective Mathematics from any other programme with an overall aggregate of 20 or better in the six subjects.
Or
Be a successful Candidate of the University's Bridging Programme in Science for females.

Bridging Programme in Science for Females.

In consonance with the University's Gender Mainstreaming programme, the Faculty of Applied Sciences will be admitting females into its bridging programme to upgrade and provide them the opportunity to gain admission into the University for Development Studies. Programme starts from April to August 2006.

Selection Procedure:

  • Only those candidates who would have obtained normal University admission but for their weak performance in Mathematics and or the Sciences will be considered.
  • Preference will be given to females from disadvantaged schools.
  • It is a residential fee paying programme at the Navrongo Campus of UDS.
  • Only candidates who become successful in continuous assessment and an end of training examination to be conducted by the Faculty will be considered for admission.

District Assemblies, Communities and NGO's are encouraged to identify and sponsor potential candidates. Details of the cost of Training will be sent directly to successful applicants.

HND Holders

  • HND applicants into the University should passes a First Class or Second Class Upper Division. The HND applicants would be admitted to year two (2).
  • The applicants would be expected to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the University.

Mature Students: Applicable to persons seeking admission to B.Sc. Mathematical Science only.

Eligible Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 30 years or above;
  • Have Passes in five G.C.E. 'O' Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics/Statistics and Science;
  • SSSC/WASSC holders must have passes in English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and three elective subjects including Elective Mathematics;
  • Candidates would be expected to write and pass a selection examination and an interview to be conducted by the University.

  • PhD & MSc in Statistics
  • PhD & MSc in Biometry
  • PhD & MSc in Applied Statistics
  • PhD & MSc in Statistical Computing
  • PhD & MSc in Computational Mathematics
  • PhD & MSc in Mathematical Physics

Entry requirements

  • Applicants should have a related good first degree in the relevant field or its acceptable equivalent from a recognized University.
  • Applicants will be short listed and invited for a section interview.
  • Applicants should be capable of meeting all financial obligations in connection with the course.
