Faculty of Agriculture
The Faculty of Agriculture which is located in Nyankpala within the Tolon/Kumbumgu District, about 20 km south-west of Tamale, the capital of Northern Region of Ghana is arguably the largest Agric Faculty in the Country. It was the first Faculty to be established in the University and it offers a four-year general degree programme, with very little specialization, leading to B.Sc. (Agric. Technology). The Faculty currently runs Post-graduate programmes and is intending to expand both post and under-graduate programmes soon.
Students of the Faculty has six main options from which to choose for their limited specialization as they progress in the years.
The Faculty of Agriculture has ten existing departments, seven in the mainstream Agric, namely: Animal Science, Agric Mechanisation, Agric Econs and Extension, Horticulture, Agronomy, Biotechnology and Family and Consumer Sciences which took off in September, 2011. Agric and Resource Economics, Agribusiness Management and Finance as well as Agric Extension, Rural Development and Gender Studies, are 3 other departments that come under Agribusiness. Students of the Faculty therefore have these options from which to choose for their limited specialization as they progress in the years.
Approval has been sought for the Faculty to run new programmes in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology, Food Science and Technology as well as Veterinary Nursing in collaboration with the Pong Tamale Veterinary College. These new programmes coupled with the current running ones are being packaged into sandwich courses as well in order to attract a yearning market seeking upgrade in individual status.
