Staff of the Faculty of Integrated Development Studies


The faculty has the following departments:

  • African and General Studies
  • Economics and Entrepreneurship Development
  • Environment and Resource Studies
  • Planning, Land Economy and Rural Development
  • Social, Political and Historical Studies

The Faculty offers the following undergraduate Programmes:

  • 4 - year B.A. Integrated Development Studies (IDS)
  • 3 - year B.A. Integrated Community Development (ICD)
  • 2 - year Diploma in Integrated Community Development
  • Ghana Rural Animators Training (Certificate Course)

B. A. INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT STUDIES

This is a four-year degree programme with emphasis on interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, with minimum specialisation around the following subject areas.

  • Economics and Entrepreneurship Development
  • Environment and Resource Studies
  • Development Planning and Land Economy
  • Social and Development Administration
  • Development Communication

Entry Requirements

SSSC/WASSC holders seeking admission into the B.A. (Integrated Development Studies) degree Programme must have passes in:

  • Three Core subjects, namely; English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science.
  • Any three elective subjects, preferably in the social sciences, with an aggregate score of 20 or better in six subjects.

Mature Students: Applicable to persons seeking admission to B.A. Integrated Development Studies only.

Eligible Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 30 years or above by August 31, 2008;
  • Have Passes in five G.C.E. 'O' Level subjects including English Language and Mathematics;
  • SSSC/WASSC holders must have passes in English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and three elective subjects;
  • Have five years post qualification experience.
  • Candidates would be expected to write and pass a selection examination and an interview to be conducted by the University.

HND Holders

HND applicants into the University should posses a First Class or Second Class Upper Division. The HND applicants would be admitted to year two (2).

The applicants would be expected to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the University.

B.A. INTEGRATED COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (ICD)

This is a 3 - year post diploma degree programme.

  • Diploma applicants into the ICD should posses a First Class or Second Class Upper Division.
  • The applicants would be expected to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the University.

DIPLOMA IN INTEGRATED COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (DICD)

This Diploma is a two (2) year participatory and experiential programme, that seeks to produce excellent middle level leadership who can effectively combine management of development office with animation and facilitation of communities' development initiatives.

Courses to be taught include

  • Human Relations and Development
  • Project Planning and Management
  • Literacy and Development
  • Entrepreneurship Development
  • Conflict Resolution and Peace Building
  • Introduction to Community Development Theory
  • Research Methods (with emphasis on PRA)

DICD is staggered 'on' and 'of' to afford staff of NGOs and institutions in development work, the opportunity to combine academic work with on the job practicals. It offers experiential and participatory learning.

Excellent graduates of DICD can ladder into a degree programme or similar levels of higher learning.

Entry Requirements

Eligible students must have five (5) passes in SSSC or 5 credits in WASSC or 'O' levels including Credits in English Language and Mathematics.

Students with one of the following criteria would have an added advantage.

  • At least three (3) years of experience as a professional or a practitioner in community development work.
  • A Certificate in GRAT with at least three (3) years post GRAT experience in Community Development work.

Must pass a selection interview to be organized by the University.

Post-Graduate programmes offered by the Faculty:

  • MA/MPhil in Development Management
  • Post Graduate Certificate in Development Management

Entry requirements

  • Applicants should have a related good first degree in the relevant field or its acceptable equivalent from a recognized University.
  • Applicants will be short listed and invited for a section interview.
  • Applicants should be capable of meeting all financial obligations in connection with the course.

All the new courses are full time academic programmes.

MPhil In Development Studies

This is a four-year sandwich programme leading to the award of an MPhil in Development Studies. This course requires that Students spend 3 months each year in residence. The remaining 9 months of the year are dedicated to on-the-job periodically supervised research. The course centre is the Navrongo Campus of the University.

Entry requirements

  • Applicants should have a good first degree or its acceptable equivalent from a recognized University.
  • Applicants should be in employment.
  • Applicants will be short listed and invited for a selection interview
  • Applicants should be capable of meeting all financial obligations in connection with the course.

Role of The Employer

  • The employer should endorse the release of the student(s) for residential academic work in UDS for 3 months each year for 4 years.
  • The employer should permit follow-up training from Lecturers of UDS on the student's job within the 9 months of each year for 4 years.
