The Academic Board has approved the School of Medicine and Health Sciences request for the upgrading of the post State Registered Nurses Diploma in Nurse Practitioner to a degree programme.
The implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach for the training of doctors has begun. The PBL allows for some interactive teaching and moulds a holistic medical student beginning from year one. The programme involves the use of several district hospitals and their consultants/specialists and exposes students as well as takes medical care to the rural communities.
There are plans to partner with some institutions in Africa that use the PBL model in the training process and may involve students’ exchange in critical areas. Adjunct Professors from some of these and other institutions have already indicated their intention to be part of the UDS programme. Similarly, there has been overwhelming response to our advertised search for associate lecturers and on the possibility of having joint appointments with relevant employers in the health sector.
Clinical TrainingIn the past years, UDS had concentrated on the basic science training of students in the Medical programme. Students were then sent to UGMS and KNUST SMS for the clinical training. The situation now is that these medical institutions have increased their numbers and with limited facilities, it is now no longer possible for them to admit UDS students for the clinical.
Consequently, UDS has taken strongly in good faith and with considerable pleasure the suggestion from a team from the Medical and Dental Council that we should proceed immediately with remedial pre-clinical training, with the expectation that we will be allowed ultimately to offer full clinical training.
The first batch of 35 students from UDS who have completed their pre-Clinical would be recalled to Tamale for bridging courses in Pathology, Haematology and Neuroscience, with the expectation that they will continue with clinical training on terms agreed/to be agreed with MDC and Directors of Tamale Teaching and four-five designated Regional/District Hospitals that have been identified.
