FACULTY OF PLANNING AND LAND MANAGEMENT

In 2007 the Department of Planning, Land Economy and Rural Development (DPLERD) was requested to explore the possibilities of upgrading into a faculty.   The need for additional new faculties on the Wa Campus of UDS stems from several factors including the following:

1. The need to constantly look out for possible unique niches that make UDS programmes stand out differently from other existing programmes to accomplish the mandate of UDS and national aspirations.
2. Current and future demands for programmes.  Over the years there has been a phenomenal demand for admission into the limited programmes of just one faculty. Student numbers on the WA Campus increased phenomenally from a humble beginning with 55 students to more than 6,000 in the 2008/2009 academic year.  Currently, all these students are pursuing a single degree programme.   The need for diversity in the programme structure to accommodate the growing numbers has become inevitable.
3. Optimizing the use of local, regional and national resources.  Of the four current campuses of UDS, Wa Campus has the largest physical space in terms of land area, large sizes of the upcoming and planned lecture theatres, etc.  This is supported by a vibrant private sector that has provided accommodation, transport and other vital services for students and staff.  With all these potentials, the available resources will be grossly underutilized if it continues to host only one faculty amidst the rapidly growing number of SHS graduates that are being turned out every year.
4. The need to produce graduates from a wide range of programmes to meet the changing national human resource needs in a fast globalizing world vis-à-vis the slowly changing large rural subsistent economy is paramount.   It does become imperative to produce graduates with not only the requisite knowledge and skills but favourable attitudes, to handle these complex changes and their impacts become paramount.

PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH
The University for Development Studies (UDS) was established in 1993 by the Government of Ghana to “blend the academic world with that of the community in order to provide constructive interaction between the two for the total development of Northern Ghana in particular and the country as a whole” (PNDC Law 279, Section 2).

Thus, this Faculty in line with the University’s mandate and its methodology of teaching, research and extension so far indicates that its programmes have a poverty focus. Pro-poor focus in teaching, learning and practically oriented research into how poverty can be reduced is pivotal to Ghana’s development effort. This explicit focus is quite missing in the orientation of programmes of other Universities in Ghana.

The key principles that will guide the teaching, learning and research include, namely:

1. Integrated approach;
2. Professional competence; and
3. Community orientation and indigenous knowledge systems and practices
4.  Sensitivity to endogenous development, participation, conflict management, environmental sustainability, gender and marginalization, advocacy and policy influencing.
