A group of students from University for Development Studies, Tamale, challenged other teams from around the globe in the recent Google Online Marketing Challenge 2016 Edition, emerging Semi-Finalists in the AdWords Business category. With 2,135 teams successfully completing the AdWords campaign globally, out of which 92 teams are from Middle East & Africa and 8 teams from Ghana, Blue Team from UDS ranked 2nd in Ghana and 13th in the Middle East & Africa Regional level. Considering the competition this year, Google describes the team’s performance as outstanding and worth the recognition.

The team was made up of Gilbert K. Bosomtwe, a fifth year student of the School of Medicine, Silas Kotoku (year 4), Priscilla Sasu (year 3) and Mohammad Ali Katu (year 2), all Medical Laboratory Science students of the School of Allied Health Sciences. The team competed under Mr. Francis Dittoh, an ICT lecturer and Web Master of the University as the GOMC Professor. Also mentoring the team was Professor Theresa B. Clarke, a professor of Marketing at James Madison University, US.

The team worked with Fashion Ghana, an Accra based Fashion Company that hosts a daily updated fashion blog, an online African wear boutique and local fashion events across the country.

The Google Online Marketing Challenge is a unique opportunity for students to experience and create online marketing campaigns using Google AdWords and Google+. Over 100,000 students and professors from almost 100 countries have participated in the past 9 years. With a $250 AdWords advertising budget provided by Google, students develop and run an online advertising campaign for a business or non-profit organization over a three-week period. The teams that develop and communicate the most successful campaigns win awesome prizes, including trips to Google offices. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the optional Google+ Social Media Marketing category by creating and managing a Google+ Page for their clients over a five-week period.
