Staff of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences


The University for Development Studies, School of Medicine and Health Sciences had been using traditional curriculum to train her medical students since it was estblished in 1996, but there had been a change over to the Problem Based Learning methodology since September 2007.

The rationale for this chanbe overto PBL lies in the mission statement of the University
"A school of Medicine and Health Sciences Situated in Northern Ghana with a unique mandate to prepare health professional and scientists, with the right beliefs and attitudes to work in depreve rual communities, using the Problem Based Learning and the Community-Based Extension Service approaches. A crop, who can, and are apt to adapt to, initiate change and collaborate within interdisciplinary teams to contribute significantly to humane and cost effective health care".

The School of Medicine and Health Sciences offers courses in:

  • Medicine (MBChB) (6 -Year programme),
  • BSc Community Nutrition (4 -Year programme)
  • BSc. Nurse Practitioner (4 - year Programme)

Entry Requirements

SSSC/WASSC holders seeking admission to the MBChB/Community Nutrition, Programmes must have passes/credits in:

  • Three core subjects (not lower than grade D), namely English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science;
  • Any three elective subjects (not lower than grade C) from the Science Programme with an overall aggregate of 20 or better in the six subjects.

    B.Sc. Nurse Practitioner Programme

    The B.Sc. Nurse Practitioner Programme is a 4 - Year degree Programme. Candidates wishing to pursue this Programme are required to possess the following:

    • GCE ‘O’ Level or SSSC/WASSC
      And
    • Be a State Registered Nurse with at least three (3) years experience.

    Applicants with Diploma in Nurse Practitioner would be admitted to Year II of the Programme.
    The applicants would be expected to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the University.
