Prof. Abdul-Halim  Abubakari

Background

Abdul-Halim Abubakari (PhD) is an Associate Professor with the Department of Horticulture and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Sciences. He obtained a BSc. Degree in Agriculture Technology (Horticulture option) in1998, from the University for Development Studies, Ghana. After his National Service, he worked as a Senior Research Assistant in the Department of Horticulture UDS, from 1999-2001. In 2001, he was awarded the prestigious Chevening Postgraduate Scholarship to study in England by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) of the United Kingdom. Prof. Abubakari obtained MSc. Degree in Environmental Management in 2003, from the University of London and a Diploma in Environmental Science from Imperial College, London. He holds a PhD degree in Landscape Science and Ecology from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana.  Prof. Abubakari was first appointed Lecturer in the Department of Horticulture, UDS in 2004 Senior Lecturer, in 2013 and currently holds a position as an Associate Professor (since 2019). He is currently the Vice Dean of FoAFCS (since 2021). He has more than 17 years of teaching and research experience in Landscape Science and ecologically sustainable production systems. Prior to his appointment as Vice Dean of FoAFCS, he held several positions in the University, including; Head, Department of Horticulture (2016-2021), Quality Assurance Officer, Department of Horticulture (2016),  Examination officer, Department of Horticulture (2004-2012), Departmental of Horticulture Seminar Coordinator (2004-2010), member Faculty of Agriculture Sandwich Courses Development Committee, (2010), member Faculty of Agriculture Grounds and Gardens Committee (2010) Departmental Representative on Academic Board (2004-2009). Prof. Abubakari served as the National Co-ordinator for the Ghana Institute of Horticulturists (GhIH) and Canadian Society for Horticultural Science (CSHS) International Horticulture Partnership Project in 2010-2011, Hon. National Secretary (2017-2021) and President Since 2021. He has been serving as member of GHIH National Council. As part of his research and knowledge in extension responsibilities, he provided technical support services in Project Design, Best Management Practices, Monitoring and Evaluation to international organisations including; Canadian Society for Horticultural Science (CSHS), Netherland Development Organisation (SNV) and German Technical Cooperation (GIZ). He has published more than 50 peer review papers and he is a reviewer of several international journals including Acta Horticulturae.
