Background

Israel K. Dzomeku (PhD) attended University of Ghana, Legon where he graduated with B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Agriculture (Soil Science option). He also holds Post-Graduate Diploma in Soil Science from As, Norway, an M.Sc. degree in Weed Science from the Amadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Agronomy (Weed Science) at the University of Reading in 2003. Prof. Dzomeku, since 1996 has been working in the University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale. He was the Head of the Department of Agronomy from October 2003 to September, 2008, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture from October 2008 to December, 2009, Patron of the Ghana Association of Agricultural Students from October, 2008 to October, 2009, Chief-Editor of the Journal of Development Spectrum from October, 2008 to 2011, Dean of Graduate School from January, 2010 to December, 2012, Dean of Student’s Affairs from January, 2013 to August, 2018. He also served as the representative of UDS on the Governing Board of the Golden Sunbeam International College of Science and Technology from February, 2016-January, 2017. His research interests include, (1) Integrated weed management in Farming Systems (2) Weed Ecology of Invasive Weed Species, (3) Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM), (4) Conservation Agriculture (CA) with Green Manure Cropping, (5). Farming System Research, (6) ISFM Studies using indigenous plant materials base as component of Integrated Weed Management of weed seed bank, (7) Bio-efficacy evaluation of agricultural pesticides and safe usage and analysis of chemical residues in Irrigated and Dryland cropping systems and (8) Study of relationship of integrated weed management practices and aflatoxin in groundnut and maize. He is involved in International collaborative research and outreach with JIRCAS and AFROWEEDS and USAID sponsored projects such as IFDC, Peanut -CRSP and Peanut-PIL. As a lecturer he taught both at undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, which include at the B.Sc. (1) Introduction to Soil Science, (2) Arable Crop Production 1 (3) Experimental Design and (4) Weed Science 1 and 2. Programmes at the postgraduate level include: (1) Farming Systems, (2) Statistics and Experimental Design and (3) Weed Science. He has successfully supervised 176 undergraduate 14 M.Phil. and 1 Ph.D. students and currently supervising 3 B.Sc., 2 M.Phil. and 2 Ph.D. students and has externally assessed 6 M.Phil. and 4 Ph.D. Thesis and assessed 4 external promotion documents of Senior. Prof. Dzomeku has published extensively in many reputable journals and attended many International Conferences and workshops including. He is member of Ghana Science Association, Ghana Institute of Horticulturists, West African Rice Development Association, African Weeds of Rice (AFROWeeds) Organisation, Fellow of Ghana Institute of Horticulturists, Ghana National Agricultural Research System, Ghana-USA Peanut Research Team and Ghana Groundnut Working Group. Prof. Dzomeku is married with four children.
