Background

Raphael Adu-Gyamfi (PhD) is an Associate Professor of Plant Science. He studied at the University for Development Studies, Tamale, the University of Ghana, Legon and the University of Reading, UK. He has 20 years teaching and research experience. He handles courses in Plant Tissue Culture and Plant Biotechnology at graduate level. He also handles courses in Plant Tissue Culture, Research Methods in Agronomy and Arable Crop Production in the undergraduate level. He has researched into root and tuber crops, cereals, legumes and tree crops. He is an advocate for sustainability of crop production and has been involved in the use of biochar in sprouting yam minisetts and amending soils for yam production. He was the Project Agronomist for UDS- AGRA project that enhanced the capacities of Agricultural College graduates. He was the Principal Investigator of IFDC - UDS project on the use of briquetted NPK in maize and pepper. He evaluated nutrients losses in granular and briquetted fertilizer using lysimeter. He has worked with SNV-Ghana to study germplasm in northern Ghana. He was IFAD/ Root and Tuber Improvement Programme sponsored scholar that investigated why Pona and Labreko yam varieties do not respond to yam minisett technique and provided solution. He has enjoyed collaborative research with scientists from Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) institutions. He has attended conferences in UK, Germany, Denmark and locally. He was appointed as a coordinator for Agriculture programme in UDS Distance Learning Prorgramme during which he set up the Tamale and Damongo Centres. His experience in managing tertiary students as a Senior Hall Tutor, Hall Master and Vice-Dean of Students has given him exposure to varied human behaviour to enable him manage any workforce. He has been offering consultancy service to Amenfi Farms limited, Brightest Edge and Frontier-Agric in establishing cassava farm for cassava starch production. He is currently working with IFDC/FERARI in developing appropriate fertilizer formula and rates for maize, rice and soybean. He was appointed in 2019 by the President of Ghana onto the Governing Council of Tamale College of Education. He is a catholic and married with two boys and two girls.
