Background

Shu-aib Jakpa Sumaila (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Horticulture. He did his BSc. degree programme in Agriculture Technology at the University for Development Studies (1997), Master’s degree programme at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (2002) and PhD at the University of Twente in the Netherlands and graduated in 2016. He has served in several capacities such as Teaching Assistant and Senior Research Assistant on completion of his undergraduate degree programme and later after the Master’s and PhD programmes as the Coordinator for Quality Assurance, Seminar Coordinator, Coordinator for Sandwich Postgraduate Degree Programmes, Coordinator for the Third Trimester Practical Training Programme as well as the Field Coordinator for the INNOVKAR Project in the Department of Horticulture. He has also served at the faculty level on the Examination Malpractices Committee, Faculty of Agriculture Physic Nut Project and other committees and research projects. He is currently the Faculty/Campus Coordinator for Quality Assurance. Dr. Shu-aib Jakpa has over 20 years professional experience with the UDS. He has handled the Apiculture (Beekeeping) course at the Diploma level. At the undergraduate level, he has taught a number of courses including Introduction to Agriculture, Plant Propagation, Introduction to Agriculture, Agricultural Botany, Seed and Seed Production, Mushroom and Snail Culture as well as Apiculture. At the postgraduate level, he has provided instruction in Seed and Seed Production, Tropical and Subtropical Fruit Trees, Plant Growth Regulators as well as Research Methods and Biostatistics. He also assisted in teaching a number of courses as a Demonstrator (Assistant Lecturer) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana and University of Twente in the Netherlands. He supervised postgraduate students in Europe in their theses and other research projects and assisted a number of foreign students (mostly from European countries) to do their internships in Ghana. Dr Shu-aib Jakpa has undertaken wide-ranging series of research on the propagation of Shea and other agricultural crops, and on climate change. policy, finance, mitigation and adaptation across Ghana. His present research areas of focus are Agriculture and Sustainable Agriculture/Food Production, Shea Production, Climate Change Policy, Adaptation and Mitigation, Production/Propagation of Fruit and Industrial Trees/Crops, Beekeeping, Mushroom and Snail Farming, Agroforestry, Research Methods, Statistics/Field Experimentation/Biostatistics. He has served in several other capacities, including as a member of the National Selection Committee for the nomination of farmers for the District, Regional and National Best Farmers’ Awards. He has worked on numerous funded projects within and outside the university in Ghana and abroad, together with other organizations such as the World Bank, JICA, JIRCAS, SNV, CEDEP, GoG/VIP, GETFUND, OIC, DfID/GOAN, ASIP, AgSSIP, CBUD, ACDEP and INNOVKAR.
