Welcome to the University for Development Studies (UDS), Ghana's unique University of choice.

The UDS was established in May 1992 out of Ghana's new commitment to higher education in ensuring that universities play a more active role in addressing problems of the rural areas in particular.

No wonder therefore that its vision is the home of world-class pro-poor scholarship as reflected in its motto: 'Knowledge for Service'.

Since its birth, this modest but transforming University has zealously embarked on a mission of attaining its vision not only by positioning itself as a national asset in the facilitation of life long learning, but also by promoting equitable and socio-economic transformation of communities through practically-oriented, community-based, problem-solving, gender-sensitive and interactive research, teaching, learning and outreach programmes.

And UDS is unique because it is the only University in Ghana that was established as a multi-campus institution with campuses spread over the four northern regions of the country, to wit Brong Ahafo, Northern, Upper East and Upper West representing two thirds of the landmass of Ghana. Its Central Administration is located in Tamale, the capital city of the Northern Region.

The UDS is also unique because it is the only University in Ghana that runs an innovative Third Trimester Field Practical Programme which ensures that students and staff work closely with disadvantaged people in the communities.

Currently, the University has three Faculties, one School, an Inter-disciplinary Research Centre, a Bilingual Centre and a Post-graduate Centre.

Young as it is, the University has link-agreements with several universities in Africa, Europe and America and has forged developmental partnerships with four famous foundations in America.

And young as it is, no less a personality than the Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E Kofi Annan is an honorary graduand of the UDS.
