Prof. Abdul-Rahman Ibn Iddriss

Background

Prof. Abdul-Rahman is primarily involved in scientific solutions to guinea fowl and livestock production constraints identified on the field. Solutions are designed to be applicable at the farmer’s level. His work places emphasis on solving problems associated mostly with guinea fowl reproduction and breeding, using both whole animal, cellular and molecular approaches. He also designs and conduct behavioural studies in livestock species with prime objectives of unearthing welfare concerns in tropical animal husbandry systems, and propose solutions to them.

Prof. Abdul-Rahman has over 18 years teaching and research experience at the University. He held both academic and commercial positions. He is currently the Dean of the School of Veterinary Sciences of the University for Development Studies, and has led a number of projects on ruminant and poultry production systems, review of the guinea fowl subsector in Northern Ghana, a Co-investigator on a GCRF project entitled: “Developing a sustainable future for guinea fowl farming in Ghana: tackling juvenile mortality using a multidisciplinary approach”, and currently a Co-investigator in a UDS-Fort-Valley University collaborative project entitled “Cultivating productivity and resilience to mitigate feed insecurity in West-Central Africa. Prior to his engagement at the University, Prof. Abdul-Rahman was an Assistant Husbandry Manager and a Superintendent of breeder farm at Sydals Limited, a private commercial poultry farm on the Accra Plains (Ghana).

Prof. Abdul-Rahman has over 80 peer reviewed publications. He has supervised a number of PhD, MPhil and BSC theses. He is currently supervising a number of PhD theses both at UDS and the University of St-Andrews, Scotland, UK. Prof Abdul-Rahman has extensive network of guinea fowl and livestock farmers in Northern Ghana due to his previous and on-going engagements in the sector.
