Emmanuel Adom is a lecturer at the University for Development Studies, where he currently serves as the Acting Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Herbal Medicine. He holds a BSc in Herbal Medicine and an MPhil in Pharmacognosy from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and is presently pursuing a PhD in Biotechnology at UDS.
His research is situated at the interface of pharmacognosy, herbal medicine, and biodiversity conservation, with a strong emphasis on translating indigenous medicinal plant knowledge into scientifically validated health solutions. A central focus of his current doctoral research is the application of metabolomics to investigate ecological variation in secondary metabolites of Cryptolepis sanguinolenta, with the long-term goal of contributing to the development of a novel antimalarial drug candidate.
Beyond laboratory-based research, Mr. Adom is actively engaged in field-oriented studies on medicinal plant conservation and sustainable use. He has received a research mini grant from the Idea Wild Foundation to investigate conservation practices of threatened mahogany (Khaya) species in Ghana. His work also examines indigenous and community-based conservation strategies for vulnerable and threatened medicinal plants, particularly in northern Ghana.
He is a Fellow of the AFRIAK Programme, under which he is conducting research on indigenous medicinal plants and contributing to efforts aimed at documenting and digitising indigenous knowledge systems. Through this fellowship, his work highlights the relevance of African traditional knowledge in contemporary research, policy, and sustainable development discourse.
Mr. Adom is a member of the Executive committee member, Product Research and Development Unit executive member and the Journal club Head of School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science, UDS. He has led and chaired major stakeholder engagements involving key regulatory and professional bodies, including the Food and Drugs Authority and the Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners, contributing to discussions on herbal medicine safety, regulation, and responsible practice. He is an associate member of the Ghana Association of Medical Herbalists and a member of the Ghana Science Association.
He is the founder of the EA Research Group, a non-profit research mentorship initiative that supports final-year students and recent graduates in Northern Ghana through structured research training and preparation for postgraduate education.
At UDS, he teaches courses in pharmacognosy, herbal medicine, phytochemistry, ethnopharmacology, and medicinal plant research methods, and he is actively involved in student supervision and academic mentoring within the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
