Undergraduate Requirements
International students are admitted based on academic qualifications equivalent to Ghanaian standards. Applicants from non-English countries must demonstrate English proficiency through tests such as IELTS (minimum overall score of 6.0), TOEFL (minimum overall score of 70).
Students can also enrol in our English Proficiency Course which is run by the Department of Languages in the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, prior to the enrolment into our regular programmes. Interested applicants may contact DIRA for further information and support.
Admission Requirements
Regional specific requirements for undergraduate admissions are listed below.
A. Africa
West Africa/Central Africa
- West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) or NECO with passes in six subjects including English, Mathematics, and relevant electives.
- General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level with at least three (3) passes in relevant elective subjects. Students should have obtained GCE/ Ordinary Level credit passes in six (6) subjects including English, Mathematics and relevant elective subjects.
East Africa
- Kenya: Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum overall grade of C+ or its equivalent.
- Uganda: UCE (Uganda Certificate of Education – O-Level) & UACE (A-Level): Applicants must have at least two principal passes at A-Level in relevant subjects.
- Tanzania: Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE): At least two principal passes with a total of 4.0 points (depending on programme).
- Rwanda: Senior Six (A-Level equivalent): Minimum of two principal passes in relevant subjects. Students must meet Rwanda Education Board standards.
Francophone Africa
- Baccalaureate (WAEMU/CEMAC) with overall minimum pass of 12-14/20.
- National Baccalaureate with overall minimum pass of 12-14/20.
Southern Africa
- South Africa: National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a Matriculation Endorsement/Bachelor's Pass meeting the minimum Admission Point Score (APS) for university admission in South Africa.
- Botswana: Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) with at least a credit in six subjects including English, Mathematics and Science.
- Zimbabwe: General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level with at least two (2) passes in relevant elective subjects plus five (5) O-Level credits including English & Mathematics
- Malawi: Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) with six credit passes including English and Mathematics.
- Namibia, Zambia: School Certificate (Grade 12) with credits in five (5) subjects including English & Mathematics.
Northern Africa/Middle East
- Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia: Applicants must have passed the national Baccalaureate with the minimum average of 12/20.
- Egypt: Completion of Thanaweya Amma (General Secondary Education Certificate) with a minimum overall score (usually 50-57% depending on programme).
- Sudan: Completion of the Sudan Secondary School Certificate (SSC) or the Higher Secondary School Certificate, with passes in at least six senior academic subjects.
- Libya: Completion of the Secondary Education Certificate (شهادة الدراسة الثانوية العامة)with six senior academic courses.
B. Europe
- General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level with at least three subjects relevant to the chosen programme.
- International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with a minimum score meeting programme standard.
- European Baccalaureate (EB).
- National secondary qualifications from EU countries that grant access to university-level study (e.g., Abitur, Maturità, Baccalauréat Général).
C. Asia
- Indian Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) or Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class XII Certificate.
- Pakistan Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC).
- Chinese Senior Secondary School Graduation Certificate with acceptable scores in national or provincial exams.
- West Asian qualifications such as Tawjihi (Jordan), Shahadat Al-Thanawiya Al-Aama (Arab Gulf States) that meet university entry standards.
D. Americas
- United States: High School Diploma accompanied by acceptable SAT or ACT scores.
- Canada: Provincial Secondary School Diploma (e.g., Ontario Secondary School Diploma) with required subjects at the senior level.
- Latin America: Secondary school completion certificates such as Bachillerato that qualify students for university entry in their home countries
Postgraduate Requirements
International applicants who seek admission into our postgraduate programmes must hold a bachelor’s degree from accredited institutions equivalent to at least a Second Class (Lower division) in Ghana. Applicants from non English speaking countries must also demonstrate English proficiency through recognised tests such as IELTS (minimum overall score of 6.5) or TOEFL (minimum overall score of 80).
Students can also enrol in our English Proficiency Course which is run by our Department of Languages in the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, prior to enrolment in our regular programmes. Interested applicants may contact DIRA.

Regional specific requirements for postgraduate admissions are listed below.
A. Africa
West Africa/Central Africa
- Bachelor’s degree (4 year or 3 year honours) from a recognised university with a minimum of Second Class, (CGPA 2.5-3.0 on a 4.0 scale) Honours classification.
- Professional bachelor’s degrees (e.g., Engineering, Law, Education) must show equivalent standing.
East Africa
- Kenya: Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Lower Division.
- Uganda: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower or CGPA 2.7/5.0.
- Tanzania: Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Lower Division (GPA 2.7/5.0 or 3.0/5.0, depending on institution).
- Rwanda: Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Lower Division or equivalent CGPA.
Francophone Africa
- Licence/Bachelor (LMD system) with Mention Assez Bien (Fairly Good) or better, or Overall score 12/20 or above.
- Classical system (Baccalauréat + 3/4 years): Degree awarded with Lower Second Class equivalent.
Southern Africa
- South Africa: Bachelor’s degree with NQF Level 7/8 qualification and minimum of 2:1 or 60% average (equivalent to Lower Second Class).
- Botswana: Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class, Second Division or CGPA 2.7/4.0.
- Zimbabwe, Malawi, Eswatini, Zambia, Malawi, Namibia: Bachelor’s degree with Second Class or CGPA equivalent to 2.5-3.0/4.0 or 60%.
Northern Africa/Middle East
- Baccalaureate/Licence-Master System: Applicants must hold a Licence or equivalent Bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution.
- Algeria: Licence (Bachelor’s degree) with minimum of Pass (10-12/20) or equivalent in relevant undergraduate discipline.
- Morocco: Bachelor’s degree (Licence) with minimum of Second Class Lower or equivalent in relevant undergraduate discipline.
- Tunisia: Bachelor’s degree (Licence) with minimum of Pass (10-12/20 average) in relevant undergraduate discipline.
- General Bachelor’s Degree Systems: Applicants must hold a recognised Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- Egypt: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of Pass or Good (≈ 60%).
- Sudan: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower or Pass (≈ 50–60%) in relevant field.
- Libya: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of Pass or Second Class Lower in relevant field.
B. Europe
- United Kingdom / Ireland: Bachelor’s degree with Lower Second Class Honours (2:2) or better.
- International Baccalaureate countries: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum Good / Satisfactory classification depending on national grading.
- Germany: Bachelor’s degree with a grade of 2.5-3.0 on the German scale.
- Italy, Spain, France, Netherlands, Scandinavia: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum grade equivalent to Second Class Lower, typically: 55–65%, “Sufficiente/Buono”, “Assez Bien”, or 6.5-7.5/10 depending on the country.
C. Asia
- India: Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class or Division II, typically: 50-59%, or CGPA 5.5-6.5/10.
- Pakistan: Bachelor (16 years) with at least Second Division or CGPA 2.5/4.0.
- China: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum score of 70-75% or CGPA 2.5-3.0/4.0.
- Middle East / Gulf States: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of Good or CGPA 2.5-3.0/4.0.
D. Americas
- United States: Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum GPA 2.5-3.0/4.0 (programme dependent).
- Canada: Four year bachelor’s degree with a minimum C+ to B average, typically: 65-70%, or CGPA 2.5–3.0/4.0.
- Latin America: Licenciatura/Título Professional with minimum Good / Satisfactory standing, typically: 70-75%, or CGPA 2.5-3.0/4.0
It should however be noted that some programmes may require grades/classes higher than the minimum recommendation by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
Short-Stay International Students
Short-stay students are non-degree students enrolled at UDS for one academic trimester for coursework, research attachment, fieldwork, or academic exchange.
Academic Eligibility
Applicants must satisfy one of the following:
A. Undergraduate Short-Stay
- Currently enrolled in a recognised undergraduate degree programme at an accredited institution, or hold a completed secondary qualification that qualifies the applicant for undergraduate admission in their home country.
- Minimum academic standing:
- Cumulative GPA ≥ 2.0 / 4.0, or
- Equivalent lower second class standing, or
- Minimum 50-60% average
B. Postgraduate Short-Stay
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD programme, or
- Hold a recognised Bachelor’s degree (for taught postgraduate or research attachment)
- Minimum academic standing:
- Second Class Lower or equivalent, or
- Minimum 50-60% overall average
C. Institutional Endorsement
Applicants must provide:
- A letter of good academic standing from the home institution, and
- A formal endorsement or nomination letter for exchange, visiting, or mobility programmes (where applicable)
D. Language Proficiency
The language of instruction at UDS is English, thus, applicants must demonstrate working academic proficiency in English through one of the following:
- Evidence that prior education was conducted entirely in English, or
- A recognised English language qualification (for example, IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent), or
- A letter of proficiency from the home institution confirming adequate English competence.
E. Study Plan and Credit Arrangement
Applicants must submit:
- A brief study or research plan covering the trimester, and
- Where credit transfer is intended, a learning agreement approved by both UDS and the home institution
